Men's Health

The average life expectancy for an Australian man is 79 years old, five years less than that of the average Australian woman.

In men, fertility problems, related reproductive health issues and conditions of older age often go undetected and untreated.  The reasons why are complex; health experts, policy makers and indeed men and their families are now taking important steps. However a better understanding of male biology underpins the best approaches to tackling these men’s health issues.

PHI researchers are leading laboratory research and clinical studies. They are bridging the gap between basic research and the development of new treatments for male health conditions.

These PHI Laboratories have a focus on Men's Health:

- working in the clinic where men have hormonal conditions that impact their fertility.

- leading clinical trials of a hormonal method of male contraception.

- testing the value of testosterone therapy in men who have a hormone deficiency.

- looking at the hormonal changes that occur as men grow older and how these relate to health conditions such as obesity.

  • Male Fertility Regulation is investigating the process of healthy sperm production and what happens in the 1 in 20 men who have male fertility problems.

  • Brain & Gender is testing a concept that the higher incidence of Parkinson’s disease in men is related to the activity of a gene found only in men.
