Pregnancy researcher wins 2005 Young Scientist award

Christine White from Prince Henry’s Institute has won the 2005 Young Scientist of the Year awarded by the Australian and the British Council Australia.

Christine’s account of her research into how the embryo communicates with the womb, has won her the award. She has recently finished her PhD into the growth factor interleukin-11 and how it enables a human embryo to successfully implant in its mother’s womb.

Entrants had to write an original news story about their research in a style suitable for publication in The Australian.

“I’m excited by the award, and hope I can use it to further my writing skills to show the wider community what is so exciting about medical research,” Christine says.

The award presented by the Australian and the British Council Australia aims to help scientists improve their ability to communicate with media and the general public. It also aims to improve intellectual and cultural dialogue between Australia and the UK.

“I congratulate Christine for this valuable recognition of her research and ability to communicate complex messages to the media,” says Director of Prince Henry’s Institute, Professor Evan Simpson.

“It is a great opportunity for one of our very talented young scientists and I thank The Australian and the British Council Australia for their initiative.”

The award allows Christine to work in The Australian’s newsroom in Sydney and at The Times in London.

Prince Henry’s Institute based in Melbourne is a world leader in the field of reproductive and hormone research.
