Sex Hormone Study: Healthy Young Males Needed
Young, fit male volunteers are needed for a study by Andrology Australia to improve detection of testosterone deficiency. This is to be conducted at the leading hormone research centre, Prince Henrys Institute, based at Monash Medical Centre, Clayton.
This is the first national collaborative effort to improve diagnosis of male sex hormone levels, which will pave the way for better understanding and delivery of health care services for men in Australia, said Associate Professor Rob McLachlan of Prince Henrys Institute.
The aim of this study is create a benchmark for normality in measuring testosterone levels and other male sex hormones.
Over 75 young, fit males aged between 21- 35 years are needed for a single two-hour visit at the Prince Henrys Institute clinic, based at Monash Medical Centre in Clayton. The ANZAC Institute will be conducting the study in Sydney in collaboration with Prince Henrys Institute.
During this visit volunteers will be asked to donate a blood and a semen sample and to undergo a short physical examination.
Testosterone plays an important role in maintaining male reproductive health and wellbeing. Deficiency of testosterone can produce symptoms such as tiredness, decreased muscle mass, decreased strength and reduced sex drive.
Testosterone deficiency is uncommon in men under 40 (about one in 200 suffer from the disease), but as testosterone levels decrease with aging, some authors believe this figure will rise to one in five men over the age of 70.
If properly diagnosed, the problem can be readily treated with hormone replacement therapy. Diagnosis relies heavily on the availability of valid reference ranges from healthy normal men, to clinical testing laboratories. There is a national need to better standardise the reference ranges for reproductive hormones.
