Australian experts secure collaboration with Schering AG for prostate disease and male fertility research

Monash University, through the Monash Institute of Reproduction and Development (MIRD) and Prince Henry’s Institute of Medical Research (PHIMR), has secured a major Collaborative Research and Licensing Agreement with Schering AG, a leading German pharmaceutical company, to develop new potential therapies for prostate disease, male infertility and new contraceptive options.

Schering AG will combine its expertise in drug development with the expertise in men’s health research at the Monash Institute of Reproduction and Development (an Institute of Monash University) and Prince Henry’s Institute of Medical Research – both based in Melbourne, Australia – in a collaborative research and development program.

The agreement will fund research at MIRD and PHIMR over at least two years. The funds will enable these groups to collaborate with Schering AG’s research team to develop new drugs for use in these fields. The collaborative agreement will provide opportunities for expansion of research for young investigators in both Institutes.

The initial focus will be to investigate the role of estrogens and cytokines in benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH or prostate enlargement) and to identify novel targets implicated in the control of male fertility as potential contraceptive candidates.

“Schering AG will fund early stage research to be conducted by the two Melbourne based research Institutes, with the opportunity of licensing the outcomes from these research programs to Schering,” said Professor David de Kretser, Director Monash Institute of Reproduction and Development.

“The alliance recognises the globally significant research expertise of PHIMR and MIRD in the fields of prostate disease and male reproductive health,” said Professor Evan Simpson, Director Prince Henry’s Institute of Medical Research.

Monash University Vice Chancellor Professor Richard Larkins said the agreement acknowledged the high calibre medical research being conducted at Monash University and PHIMR.

“This collaboration reflects the exciting partnership opportunities available between research-intensive universities, medical research institutes and leading international companies,” Professor Larkins said.
