Kara Britt – 2002 Young Australian of the Year (Science and Technology)

Twenty -five year old Kara Britt is the 2002 Young Australian of the Year for Science and Technology. Kara is a PhD student at Australia’s leading centre for hormone research, Prince Henry’s Institute of Medical Research in Clayton Victoria.

As part of Prince Henry’s Female Reproduction and Breast Cancer Groups, Kara won the award for her investigatory research into the role of estrogen in the ovary.

Kara’s interest into reproductive research began in her undergraduate studies when she undertook a project on breast cancer. But it was her mother’s struggle to overcome breast cancer that helped develop her passion for research.

"My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer just after I started University. When you have an experience like that it makes you want try and make a difference”, said Ms Britt.

Thankfully Kara’s mum overcame her battle with cancer. Kara is the type of person who tries hard to make a difference. After working 10-hour days in the lab she goes home to finish her thesis and in her spare time tutors biochemistry students.

“Accolades don’t count for much in this business. It’s about patience and persistence”, she said.

Kara’s hard work has been rewarded by an offer to study at the prestigious Duke University in North Carolina, USA, where she will look further into the effects of estrogen on breast cancer.

Kara is one of 40 students currently undertaking studies at Prince Henry’s Institute. The Institute focuses on endocrinology, the study of hormones in health and disease

“Kara’s success is representative of the commitment and focus of all our young scientists,” said Professor Evan Simpson, Director of the Institute. “Their work helps us to maintain our reputation on the international stage”.

Prince Henry’s Institute of Medical Research is one of only two institutes in Australia that has World Health Organisation accreditation as a collaborating centre for reproductive health.
