Touring the Institute

PHI was delighted to welcome some old friends on 7 April when members of the Burke family toured research facilities and met staff.

PHI can trace it’s family history with the Burke’s back almost 50 years. “Bill” Burke was Senior Surgeon at the former Prince Henry’s Hospital and with his friend Fred Boylan, they were key figures in the establishment of the Prince Henry’s Hospital Medical Research Centre in 1960. Fred Boylan was the first Chairman of the Centre’s Executive Committee and Bill Burke was also a member of the committee.

Following the passing of both men the perpetual Boylan & Burke Fellowship was created in 1968 to pay tribute to their inspiring leadership in the establishment of the Prince Henry’s Hospital Medical Research Centre, the “roots’ of PHI today.

Dr Jyotsna Pippal became the current Boylan & Burke Fellow in 2007. Dr Pippal was in America at the time of the visit where she was presenting her research but sent her own personal message to the families through a video postcard.
