Prince Henry’s Researcher Honoured for Distinguished Service

Jock FindlayProfessor John Kerr (Jock) Findlay AM, of Prince Henry’s Institute, is to be awarded one of Australia’s highest honours in recognition of his distinguished service to medical research.

He will become an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO). The award is being given “for services to medicine in the field of reproductive endocrinology as a researcher, through contributions to the regulation and promotion of assisted reproductive technology and treatment, and to the development of national and international health programs”.

Prince Henry’s Institute (PHI) is Australia’s leading medical research institute investigating the role of hormones in the field of reproductive health. The independent institute also has research strengths in breast and ovarian cancer, diabetes, sex determination, obesity and cardiovascular disease.

Jock Findlay was born in 1944 in Broken Hill, NSW. He completed undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the University of Adelaide, was a Research Fellow at Bonn University, Germany and in 1971 returned to Australia to undertake research exploring the control and function of hormones in the body. Jock joined PHI in 1979 and is Head of the Female Reproductive Endocrinology Group. He was Deputy Director of PHI from 1990 to 2007.

He currently chairs the National Health and Medical Research Council Embryo Research Licensing Committee and is chair of the Infertility Treatment Authority of Victoria. He is also Director of Research at the Royal Women’s Hospital, Melbourne.

Jock lives in Hawthorn, Victoria with his wife Anne. They have two sons.

Prince Henry’s Institute (PHI) is world renowned for its research into reproduction and endocrinology, the study of hormones. Originally established as the Medical Research Centre at Prince Henry’s Hospital in South Melbourne, PHI is now an independent Institute based at Monash Medical Centre in Clayton, Melbourne, Australia.

The Institute’s research focuses on the role of hormones in conditions such as breast, ovarian and endometrial cancers, male and female infertility, diabetes, obesity and heart disease.
