Former PHI student wins Life Scientist of the Year

Posted 29 October 2009

PHI Director Professor Matthew Gillespie has sent his congratulations to the Life Scientist of the Year, a former student of the Institute.

The  2009 Science Minister’s Prize for Life Scientist of the Year has been awarded to PHI alumnus Professor Michael Cowley, for his “contribution to our understanding of obesity, diabetes and metabolism,”

Michael was an Honours and PhD student at Prince Henry’s Institute between 1994 and 1998 where he was supervised by Professor Iain Clarke.

Following his studies at PHI and at Monash University, Micheal spent ten years overseas with Oregon Health and Science University in Portland Oregon before returning to Monash University in 2008 as the VESKI Innovation Fellow.

Professor Cowley has founded a biotech company which is trialling four obesity treatments, and his team at Monash University are now developing therapies to break the connection between obesity and heart disease and diabetes.
