New clinical translation facility “a sound investment”

Within the Hospitals and Health Fund announced in the Federal Budget was a $71million commitment to develop translational research at Monash Medical Centre Clayton.

Director of Prince Henry’s Institute, Professor Matthew Gillespie said that “the Federal Government’s commitment to providing state of the art facilities for advancing knowledge transfer from research to clinical practice was vital to the health of Australians”.

“The facility is to unite the efforts of four partners - Southern Health, Monash University, Prince Henry's Institute and the Monash Institute for Medical Research - to form the Monash Health Research Precinct, with the expressed intention to provide high level knowledge-based clinical delivery. This is being achieved through our many programs in men’s and women’s health in reproductive biology, and will be extended in other national health priorities.”

Professor Gillespie said that: “I, along with our partners, are delighted with the Government’s announcement and their commitment to provide improved health to the people of Melbourne and Australia.”

“Medical research institutes, such as PHI, are working hard for the public good and they have a vital role to play in building a strong, innovation led Australian economy. I believe this is a very sound investment of public fund. The substantial infrastructure upgrade this will allow offers huge opportunities for medical research in Melbourne’s south east to flourish. There will clearly be benefits to the local community in both the short term as construction begins and in the long term as the improvements in health permeate across the nation”
